What ChatGPT Work and GPT-5.6 Mean for Businesses Building AI Solutions

The Quiet Infrastructure Event That Changes Everything

Most businesses filed OpenAI's announcement this week as product news — a new interface, an updated model. That framing undersells what actually happened.

OpenAI restructured architectural foundations beneath AI-powered products — including the voice agents, automation workflows, and intelligent assistants service businesses are deploying. For anyone building or evaluating AI solutions in HVAC, construction, or law, understanding these changes isn't optional. It's the difference between an AI strategy that holds over the next 18 months and one that gets outpaced before it launches.

What OpenAI Launched: ChatGPT Work and GPT-5.6

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, a new agentic layer inside ChatGPT, powered by GPT-5.6 — a frontier model OpenAI describes as state-of-the-art for reasoning through multi-step tasks and creating materials that follow templates and reference files.

ChatGPT Work is built on Codex, OpenAI's task-execution agent. More than 5 million people use Codex every week, and more than 1 million of those users now use it for work outside software development. That migration from developer tool to general-purpose work agent signals that the underlying technology has matured past its original use case.

What ChatGPT Work Actually Does

ChatGPT Work connects to plugins — integrations with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs, and project trackers. From connected sources, it can gather information, produce documents and slide decks, and execute multi-step workflows that persist even when the user is not in the interface.

Scheduled Tasks let ChatGPT Work run recurring tasks autonomously — monitoring data sources for changes, refreshing documents when new information arrives, synthesizing weekly updates from connected tools — without a human initiating each cycle.

Two internal examples from OpenAI's announcement illustrate the capability range:

  • In sales, ChatGPT Work turned a discovery conversation into a tailored proof of concept within 24 hours — a process that normally takes weeks.

  • In finance, month-end close and forecasting went from days to hours by helping teams move source data into spreadsheets, reconcile, build decks, and verify results.

OpenAI reports that nearly 100% of its internal teams — including finance and sales — now use ChatGPT Work and Codex. That signals velocity, but context matters: OpenAI is a technology company operating at the frontier of these tools. Time-to-value for external organizations, especially in field-service industries, will depend heavily on implementation quality and workflow design.

Availability

ChatGPT Work is rolling out to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plan users first, with Plus and Business plans receiving access over the following days. The desktop app is available globally on Mac and Windows — including Computer Use, the ability for ChatGPT to interact with local applications and execute background workflows — on every plan, including Free.

Usage works differently from a standard chat request: more complex tasks may consume more of a plan's included usage.

A Concrete Example: HVAC Dispatch

Imagine a mid-size HVAC company running 20 field technicians across multiple zones. Today, a dispatcher manually reviews service requests, cross-references technician schedules and skill profiles, and assembles daily briefing sheets from a spreadsheet, an email inbox, and a calendar — roughly 90 minutes every morning.

With ChatGPT Work connected to those same tools via plugins, a Scheduled Task could run each morning: pull new requests from email, check technician availability, cross-reference skill requirements, and produce a briefing document ready for human review before the first tech rolls out. The dispatcher shifts from assembling information to reviewing and adjusting it — exactly where field-service operations lose time.

What This Means for Businesses Evaluating AI Solutions

The Build-vs.-Buy Calculus Just Changed

This launch makes two things simultaneously true for any organization evaluating AI workflow tools:

1. The capability floor has risen. ChatGPT Work's ability to coordinate across connected tools, execute background tasks, and produce polished outputs is genuinely stronger than what was available twelve months ago.

2. Usage scales with complexity. OpenAI designed ChatGPT Work for longer, more involved work — and usage reflects that. More complex tasks consume more of a plan's available usage. For Enterprise and Edu customers, admins have spend controls: workspace-level defaults, group limits, individual overrides, and a process for reviewing requests for additional credits. Organizations deploying ChatGPT Work at scale must plan for that variability explicitly.

When a law firm or construction company weighs building a custom AI agent internally against working with a dedicated AI services provider, this usage architecture matters directly. A complex session — analyzing a large contract file, processing a month of dispatch records — draws more heavily on a plan's included usage allowance. The trade-off isn't just about technical capability. It's about who understands that architecture and builds for it from the start.

What Platform Expansion Means for Specialist Builders

Every major platform launch raises the same question: does this displace the need for specialized builders?

For field-service businesses, the honest answer is usually no. ChatGPT Work is a horizontal tool. It connects to general-purpose integrations and produces generalist outputs. A law firm's intake workflow, an HVAC dispatcher's scheduling logic, or a construction company's bid-analysis process each carry operational specifics — custom data schemas, compliance requirements, domain terminology — that horizontal tools cannot absorb without significant configuration.

Specialist organizations that deploy AI agents apply models to specific operational contexts where value is realized. ChatGPT Work raises the capability baseline available to those specialists and raises expectations business buyers bring to every AI conversation. Both are net positives.

What the Launch Actually Signals

This week's announcement is less about one product and more about where agentic AI is landing in real organizations. Multi-step workflows that used to require a developer and a custom integration layer are now available through a connected chat interface.

Business buyers will expect more from any AI solution they evaluate — and they'll arrive at those conversations having already experimented with the platform version. The opportunity for well-executed, purpose-built AI deployments is larger than it has ever been.
